Ways to work remotely on multiple PCs
As FSB's experts recommended GoToMyPC or LogMeIn for John Tolson's remote-access needs. What do you use to get to your digital files?
The best kept secret out there is NTR Connect (www.ntrconnect.com). It has everything you need and is free to $9 a month max.
By the way, the company is called BeAnywhere, and can be found at BeAnywhere.com
All the comments listed above are obviously from people who are savvy enough to setup all those free alternatives out there. But, I'm not that person (though I'm learning) and a lot of people out there aren't either. Dynamic IP Addresses, Firewalls, Routers, Networking, all that takes some knowledge, which these paid products handle – the user only needs to login. I've used both Go to my PC and Log me in before and i like the concept. I've recently discovered another company that has a similar product, but with an option to launch all the software from a USB device, which is much better, especially if you are using a public computer and you do not want to leave any traces behind. All the software is on the USB Drive, no need to install ANY software on the PC you are using. All the software is on the USB Drive.
Very convenient for a safe and stealth access to your remote computers.
The biggest problem with Remote Desktop is that you need to do port configuration, which may be a little tricky. I've been using NTRconnect for some time now (www.ntrconnect.com) and it works amazingly. They have free an paid versions, but I'm gladly paying for the service (it's not expensive and worth the money).
Well, I have to say that the most inexpensive and easier way to work remotely is running Windows XP Professional on all PCs involved. work-online
Um, why would you buy this software or any other one?
Windoze : Remote Desktop Protocol

Better yet, Mac : Remote Desktop (free in OS X)

We use e-BLVD from eBLVD.com. They provide a service for $89/month for unlimited, full-featured access to any 50 computers on the web, about $20 per year each. They also have a single PC package for $15/month or $130/year. We've been happy with the product and service.
I've used the Windows Remote Desktop (which is free, as a previous reader mentioned) for several years now and it's flawless.
What you need to ensure is that you have the right ports open on your wireless router, as it doesn't 'tunnel' through your regular 'internet port' like GoToMyPC or some of the other web-based clients. With a proper broadband connection, I can maximize the desktop from the remote PC and it feels like I'm working back in my office with little to no lag time.
And the better answer is: a laptop computer.
Or, if using Windows, just enable remote desktop. It's FREE and you should be able to log in from Windows to Windows and control the other PC. Like the other software mentioned, make sure that the computer is on, it has an Internet connection, and that you have a valid username/password for the machine.
I suggest using something like Terminal Server Pro available from http://www.elusiva.com
It's much better than either gotomypc or logmein

I have been using the free version of LogMeIn for about a month now and it works like a charm. Mr. Carpenter of Miles Technologies notes that, "…whatever work you do on the remote device … will also appear in real time on the main device…" This is true; however, LogMeIn now has the capability to allow you to black out the screen (as well as disable the keyboard and mouse) on the computer you have logged into.
