I think the first thing small businesses have to do is think out of the box. You can't do the same thing the Giants are doing because you simply don't have enough cash. I'm a HUGE supporter of starting a blog for your company. Talk about industry events, new product launches, invite guest bloggers/writers to write about a certain niche. A blog is a great way to generate website traffic. Create a blog and update it on a regular basis and you will see the traffic come. Don't update a blog, and it's a waste of your time. If you use it properly, it might be your bucket of gold. There are many strategies to implement a blog into an existing website or create it as an entire separate entity and drive traffic to your e-commerce site or your small business site. As an example, we have a blog Need Website Help that offers free tips and resources for small businesses trying to bring their business online. Our blog then drives traffic to our main website via a banner at the top. This is a win/win. We are providing users value by offering tips on making money with their websites and in return we get visitors who come to our website for help with this. Think out of the box and you will be fine.

The biggest mistakes local small retailers make is assuming that they need to compete in broad Internet wide searches for their products and services. A smarter way is to emphasize your products and services with local geographic descriptions included. Example: Dallas Texas jewelry or Memphis TN designer handbags. This approach helps local searchers to see your site for those product searches but also when other local searches are done as well.
