I always recommend tapping into your social network, especially family and friends, to get money and resources to start a business.

40billion.com helps entrepreneurs raise money for startups through friends and family rather than through traditional financial institutions. It is the first friends-and-family funding network for small-business entrepreneurs. Using the Internet-based service, entrepreneurs connect with their social networks - friends, family, friends of family, colleagues, and others - to raise capital, and entrepreneurs can share their fundraising pages on MySpace and Facebook too. 40billion.com’s scalable platform facilitates the funding requests and transactions to make it easier for an entrepreneur to manage many investors, who can provide $50 to $10,000 each.

There are a three important thing that you must know:
1)Buy the best equipment for your restaurant,
2)Keep your restaurant clean and beautiful,
3)Find the best staff for your restaurant.

The best advice that I can give you, is that 24/7 you must care about success of your business and comfort of your consumers. Your consumers must love the restaurant and want to come back again.

Another potential challenge for ex-inmates is licensing. States, counties and cities have a variety of licensing requirements for different types of businesses and in many instances operating a business without the required license is a crime, and would violate release conditions.

So it is important to conform to license requirements.

If his father is in prison, he has virtually no chance of making it in his own business without years of hard work in the food industry; even then the food industry has a higher failure rate than almost any other small business. On the other hand if his father already works in the business this individual desires to be in, he should leverage this close connection in order to get experience...someone who has been incarcerated has to use everything available to move forward.
In answer to your question, I own my own business, my father was a partner in one. If you choose to respond, consider checking your spelling before calling me simple minded.

What differance does it make if his father is in prision. Think you trying to be funny. Let us ask you a question? Do you do everything your father does/did? I didn't know there are still simple-minded people left in the 21st century. It's a shame we have the same first name!!!

Awesome article, folks. Capitalism as a life-changing vehicle of redemption. That is great. Good luck to all.
This is the American dream in practice and precept.

I must admit that the term "captive audience" elicited a chuckle.

But the article is good information for anyone interested in starting a small business!
