How do I recruit and pay employees?

I own and operate a small residential and commercial cleaning company. I want to grow it as big as I can. How do I go about hiring people (considering this isn't a career for the vast majority of individuals). Also, considering gas prices are substantial, I'm assuming I'll have to increase overall wages per hour, correct?

From Gui, Miami, Fla Jeremy don’t let this be a daunting task for you. I am sure that this is an “Honorable job” and many a people would like to earn a wage. I recommend that you inquire with the competition, or a similar business, to determine the wage scale. I would think anywhere between $10.00 to $15.00 would be an adequate range. At least that is the case in South Florida… all-in-all you shouldn’t have a problem hiring a person!
Jeremy, in this economy, you should have your pick of candidates. post an ad either online or on your local newspaper job classifieds. Then have then fill out a job application, which you may obtain from any office store or even from your local WAL-Monkey superstore.
3) Divide the completed applications into two piles – PILE 1 & PILE 2
Place candidates applications with the skills and knowledge you seek in pile 1, place others on pile 2.
4) Interview only those from pile 2 you would not mind leaving in charge of your business. Then, from the very few left, do a reference check and/or background check.
5) Call candidates that passed the screening back for a 2nd interview and ask them some of the same ?, to see if they answer the same way.
6) Hire only the ones that seem like ready to or willing to learn your business and take pride in your business and those that you would not mind selling your business to down the road. Sorry, dude, but I would need about 5x the space provided here to guide you all the way to a successful hire.
