Good morning Adriana,
Hello, for years I’ve been searching for a grant that’ll help me out financially, that deal with “business” or “entrepreneurial” grants to help out a business that I intend on starting. I am handicapped 48 year-old man and I’m trying to get a grant. I would like to know some form of government sponsored monetary information. There may be a few areas that I could possibly apply for a research grant, but I’m not familiar with that. Please, will you reply with someone whom has experience in that area of expertise? Thanks in advance for your help in that matter. Gods peace to you! Sincerely, from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Louie LOUIEUP: LLC
Carpe Diem or Seize the Day!
I want to pursue my many projects, To help me realize that quite a few of my dreams will come true with His grace!

California is actually disbursing grant funds from the federal government's stimulus funding package, which includes small businesses. Go to the California government web site (www.ca.state.gov). Some are distributed through local/county Economic development agencies.

You are absolutely correct that are alot of scams out there. Far too many in fact. One 'tip' is to ignore the 'sponsor' ads if you do a Google search or look at search listings that have a .gov (government agency) or .org (nonprofit organization) domain.

I also agree that the media and government consumer protection agencies (such as the FTC) should do a better job of explaining these differences. Many states have warned consumer or brought charges for legal violations against grant scammers.

If you've been scammed, report it to your state attorney general or office of consumer affairs.

Grants are also available for small business. Again, you just need to know where to find them. I am an attorney and actually wrote my book to counter the various 'scams' and con artists who want to rip you off. I'm as sick of the bogus emails and other marketing gimmicks as you are.

The truth is, there are many legitimate grant opportunities available. There are also scams. The challenge is distinguishing them.

I'm repeating myself, but for federal agency grant opportunities go to www.grants.gov or www.cfda.gov (Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance).

The challenge is more one of timing - finding grants that are available when you are looking for them.

Feel free to contact me at needtokno@comcast.net with any questions.

Please don't let the claim that 'everything is a scam' prevent you from pursuing your business dream and seeking grant funds. There very definitely are grant funds available to start or expand a small business. Federal, state and local agencies often offer such grants. You just need to know where to look to find them.

As a woman business owner, you are in a population group (women) that is most often eligible for such small business start-up grants.

Do not let the myth that 'small business don't get grants' stop you. (I have an entire chapter of my book devoted to exposing such 'grant myths'.).

Three practical suggestions: 1) Try using web sites such as Grants.gov or CFDA.gov (federal grants), 2) Check out your state or local government's web page, and 3) Use a search engine such as Google and enter terms 'grants for woman-owned small business in ___" Fill in the state. After you get through all the 'sponsor'/ads, you should find some real grant funding opportunities.

I recently published a book, The Grant Authority, which includes this info and much more, including many small business grant 'Success Stories'. (Not trying to sell you the book, just an FYI.)

I hope this helps. If it does, please let me know.

All I can say is READ THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS - THE FINE PRINT!!! You will find that these "grants" are no where near free...as I did.

The internet it chock full of "Free Government Grants" and "Govt. Grants for Women" just pay shipping costs, touting them with "as seen on FOXnews, NBC," etc. Now some sites have pictures of Obama w/the American flag.

You would think news organizations and ESPECIALLY the government would take issue at their attempt to infer a relationship with these organizations.

Trusting people who don't have alot of money and are trying to better themselves are being financially penalized for taking these ads at face value.

It is too bad that a lot of people have been scammed, myself included.

I continue to see programs promoting their Grant programs on Television. I wonder why those companies have not been stopped from advertising their grant programs by now.

There is no such grant give away. It is complex and time consuming to locate grants and to qualify for a grant. Grants are available for specific organizations like educational institutions, States, etc.

The National Association for the Self-Employed does, in fact, award grants of up to $5K to members who illustrate a specific business need. Check out our website (www.NASE.org) to find out more!
